The OKX app includes a self-custody Web3 wallet alongside the exchange account. It lets you hold tokens on many blockchains and connect to decentralised apps (DApps). The key difference: with a self-custody wallet, you alone control the keys.
Exchange account vs Web3 wallet
| Exchange account | Web3 wallet | |
| Who holds the keys | The exchange | You |
| Recovery | Account login and support | Only your seed phrase |
| Use | Trading, P2P, Earn | DApps, DeFi, NFTs, on-chain transfers |
Creating the wallet
- In the app, switch to Wallet (Web3).
- Create a new wallet.
- Back up the seed phrase when prompted.
Backing up your seed phrase correctly
- Write the words on paper in the correct order. Consider a second copy in a separate safe place.
- Never screenshot it, email it, or store it in cloud notes.
- Anyone with these words can take everything in the wallet. Nobody legitimate will ever ask for them.
Avoiding wallet drainers
- Only connect to DApps you trust and typed in yourself.
- Read every signature request. Be very careful with “approve” or “permit” requests for unlimited token spending.
- Ignore airdrops of unknown tokens and links that come with them.
- Periodically review and revoke old token approvals.
