A TRON multi-signature scam changes or pre-sets a wallet's account permissions so that someone else, not you, controls the funds. The wallet still shows a balance, but every attempt to send fails, or the gas you pay disappears without the withdrawal going through. OKX's help center describes two versions of this scam, and both can be spotted by checking the address on Tronscan.
Version 1: your permissions were transferred
You used the wallet normally, then clicked a link, often promising discounted fuel cards, gift cards or phone top-ups. The page ran code that asked you to approve a permission change. Once approved, control of the account passed to the scammer's address.
- The balance is still visible in your wallet.
- Transfers are blocked with a message that the account lacks the required administrative permission.
Version 2: the "free" shared seed phrase
Someone posts a seed phrase publicly, often pretending to be quitting crypto or giving funds away. The wallet holds USDT, so people import it and try to withdraw.
- The wallet was set up with multi-signature, so importing the phrase does not give you control.
- To withdraw you first send TRX for gas. A pre-set process moves that TRX out immediately, and the withdrawal never completes.
- The bait is the visible balance; the scam is the gas you send.
How to check on Tronscan
| What you see on tronscan.org | What it means |
|---|---|
| Your address is missing from the account's permission settings, or an unfamiliar address was added | Your permissions were transferred (version 1) |
| "Permission is authorized to 2 account(s)" | A multi-signature wallet set up as bait (version 2) |
| Gas fee leaves the wallet but no withdrawal happens | A pre-set process is draining fees |
What to do
- Stop sending TRX or any other funds to the affected address.
- Look the address up on Tronscan to see which situation applies.
- If it is a shared seed phrase wallet, walk away: OKX says the assets in that case cannot be accessed.
- If your own wallet's permissions were changed, create a new wallet with a new seed phrase for future use and contact official OKX support for guidance. OKX's article does not describe a way to reverse a permission change.
How to avoid it
- Ignore links offering discounted gift cards, fuel cards or top-ups, especially ones that send you to "complete a payment".
- Read every signature request and its risk warning. Stop if it mentions a permission change or account update.
- Never import a seed phrase someone shared publicly. Free crypto offers are bait.
- A note on TRON addresses: a brand-new address must be activated by receiving some TRX before it can transact. That is normal, and different from a scam.
